Relax Your Way To Success

I want you to relax. Yes, just relax. OK, I'm a little selfish. I want you to relax, so we can do more productive work together. I’m not kidding. Take a nap or, better yet, take a vacation. We’re deep in the heat of summer — what better time to just relax?

After you’ve released your stress and tension, you’ll feel rejuvenated, and then we can work together much more effectively.

Don’t believe me? Lots of experts will back me up. Here’s a little light internet research I’ve done on the subject:

  • In his New York Times article, “Relax! You’ll Be More Productive,” Tony Schwartz writes, “[d]uring the day we move from a state of alertness progressively into physiological fatigue approximately every 90 minutes. Our bodies regularly tell us to take a break, but we often override these signals and instead stoke ourselves up with caffeine, sugar and our own emergency reserves — the stress hormones adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol.”
  • Over at Big Think, in “How Relaxing Makes You More Productive,” Orion Jones writes, “The most productive individuals, from athletes to academics, start work early in the day and take pauses — to eat, to exercise, to nap — every hour and a half. As a result, they are more productive and have more free time.”
  • “Giving yourself a breather and putting emphasis on what your body needs isn’t selfish or indulgent. It’s a necessity that makes handling everything else much easier," according to “Using Strategic Renewal to Relax and Improve Productivity” on The One Thing.
  • “Slowing down is a deliberate choice that can lead to greater appreciation for life and a greater level of happiness, which yields better results in one’s endeavors,” writes Faisal Hoque in “Buddha Had It Right: Relax the Mind and Productivity Will Follow” on Fast Company.

So when you get stressed and wonder how you’re going to get the project done well, on time and within budget, just relax!
